William Thomas Ragan received God’s merciful and perfect healing on May 3, 2017. The story of Tom’s remarkable life began February 9, 1940 when he was born in Atlanta to Elbert Powell and Willie Rae Arnold Ragan. His father had left the rural life in the Waco community of Carroll County Georgia and found work with Western Union Telegraph Co. in Atlanta. After high school, Tom pursued his college education at The University of Florida and attained his degree as a civil engineer. The Vietnam War had been escalating for some years and, like so many others, he answered the call to service in The United States Army. His tour of duty was as an aviator flying helicopter missions in the support of ground troops. As many of the war’s pilots returned home, they seemed a natural fit for the airlines who were expanding service in the states. Tom signed on with Eastern Airlines and spent his career with them. He possessed a strong work ethic and had a deep commitment to his family and community. Having some flexibility in his schedule as a pilot gave him time to be deeply involved in his community, his children’s school activities and his faith community. Tom was president of The East Coweta High School Booster Club for many years and a member of the Senoia Optimist Club. He became a fixture in the community as a first responder for the Coweta Country Fire Department. Crossroads Church was a large component of Tom’s life and he faithfully served as an elder in the church. He also owned the local Crossroads Restaurant in Senoia. When flying passengers in a plane was no longer an option, Tom was content to ferry Coweta County school children as a bus driver for ten years. As the Bible notes, “Well-done, my good and faithful servant”. In addition to his parents, Tom is preceded in death by his lovely daughter Jennifer Ragan and a brother Powell Ragan. He was a devoted husband to his wife Barbara Frith Ragan. He will be remembered as a loving, supportive and leader by example for his children Ricky (and Sharon) Ragan, Rob (and Sue) Ragan, Brian (and Donna) Ragan. Fortunate to call him “Papa” were his grandchildren Will Ragan and his fiancé Haleigh Herring, Lauren (and Ryan) Phillips, Lindsey Ragan, Matthew Ragan, Patrick Ragan and Shawn Ragan. His great grandson is Grayson Thomas Phillips. He was a loyal brother to Ed Ragan and Jerry Ragan and his wife Ann. Also surviving is his brother-in-law Herb (and Luci) Frith. Funeral arrangements are by McKoon Funeral Home at 38 Jackson Street in Newnan where the family will receive friends on Saturday evening between 6:00 PM and 8:00 PM. Tom’s amazing life will be honored at a service to be held at Crossroads Church on Highway 16, Sunday, May 7, 2017 at 3:30 PM. The interment with appropriate military honors will follow at the Senoia City Cemetery. Frederick Paul Scott, age 79, passed away Friday, September 29, 2017 at Piedmont Atlanta Hospital surrounded by family. He was born April 9, 1938 in Birmingham, AL to the late John William Scott, Sr. and Margaret Nobblitt Scott. He is survived by his loving wife Dee Holtam Scott; children, Scotty Paul Scott, Dennis Scott, Sissy Scott; grandchildren, Kristy Perry, Trini Henson, Chelsey Austin, Kayla Johnson, Kourtney Scott and great grandchildren, Jayden, Hailee, Aubree and Michael. He is also survived by his brother John W. Scott, III. The memorial service is Saturday, October 7, 2017 at 6 PM in the chapel of McKoon Funeral Home, 38 Jackson Street, in Newnan. The family will receive friends from 4 PM until service time on Saturday at the funeral home. Donald Ray Smith, age 80 of Newnan, passed away on Thursday, September 14, 2017 at his home after a short-diagnosed illness. He was born September 22, 1936 in Morristown TN to the late Vernon Smith and Elsie Smith. He was a retired 20 year veteran of the US Army. He is survived by his wife, Renate Smith of Newnan; daughter’s; Anita Elizabeth Searcy and Betty McNeall, son, Donald Ray Smith, Jr. and grandchildren.  Charter Member - US Army
David Lamar Mealor passed away peacefully on Sunday, June 25, 2017 at the age of 94. He will be forever remembered for his quiet strength, his sense of humor, and his sense of duty and loyalty to his family. David was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 62 years, Nelwyn Cobb Mealor, his parents Sabra Reynolds King and Walter Stone Mealor, and his brothers Walter Scott Mealor and Larry Reynolds Mealor. David was born in Newnan, Georgia on March 7, 1923. He graduated from Newnan High School in 1940, and joined the US Army. He served during World War II as a communications specialist in the 116th Field Artillery. He was proud that he worked for and retired from Delta Air Lines. He was also proud that he earned a law degree while working at Delta. After his retirement he was actively involved with Kiwanis, and did volunteer work with students in the local schools. He enjoyed telling stories about growing up in Newnan with the lumberyard as his playground, and sharing tales of his experiences in the Army. He was happiest surrounded by his family and watching the Golf Channel. David is survived by his 7 children, David James Mealor (Laurie), Mary Mealor Foster, Thomas Lamar Mealor (Frederica), Susan Mealor Guarnett, Martha Mealor Smith (Ron), Marguerite Mealor Carlton (Bill), and Matthew Scott Mealor (Julie). David is also survived by 18 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren, and his nieces and nephews. A celebration of David’s life will be held at 1PM on July 29th, 2017 at the McRitchie-Hollis Museum, 74 Jackson Street, Newnan, GA 30263. SMSgt James F. Dobbins (USAF) was born December 9, 1936 to Joseph Bowman and Freda Alderman Dobbins in Radford, VA. He married his wife Vonda, on October 21, 1983 in Las Vegas, NV. A 1955 graduate of Radford High School, he joined the Air Force a few months later. James spent most of his 20 years of service at Barksdale Air Force Base in Bossier City, LA. He also served in the Vietnam War for which he received a National Purple Heart Hall of Honor Award. Following retirement from the Air Force as a SMSgt, he later owned and operated Econ-O-Wiping Cloth in Shreveport, LA from 1985 until 2005. He moved to Alabama in 2013. He is survived by his wife, Vonda Dobbins; step-son, Wayne Farrell of AL; step-daughter, Teresa Melancon of LA; sister-in-law, Peggy Dobbins of VA; nephews, Darren, Brian, and Jeff Dobbins of VA; one niece, Terri Vaughn of VA; and a very special fur baby, Blaze. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Ed Dobbins and Billy Ray Dobbins and a nephew, Gary Dobbins. SMSgt James F. Dobbins (Jim) passed away on May 15th at his home in Springville, AL. He was a loving husband and father. Jim was a very outgoing person, loved people, and never met a stranger. He was kind to everyone he met and was always proud and honored to have served his country. He will be missed by all who knew him.  Member - US Navy
Post Commander 1983-84 James Floyd Goodrum, 93, of Fayetteville passed away on Thursday, March 16, 2017. He was born in Griffin, GA on January 30, 1924 to Jessie and Jamie Jackson Goodrum. Mr. Goodrum proudly served his country aboard the Escort Carrier USS Bogue during World War II in the United States Navy. In 2010, he was named Newnan Coweta Veteran of the Year. After 35 years, he retired from Delta Air Lines where he was the General Manager of the Propulsion Engineering Department. Mr. Goodrum was a member of the American Legion, the Sons of Confederate Veterans, the Sons of the American Revolution and Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was also a master wood worker and craftsman. Mr. Goodrum was preceded in death by his wife, Elsie Goodrum and his parents. He is survived by his daughter, Linda Steakley (Ken); his sons, Jeffrey Goodrum (Margaret) and Kenneth Goodrum (Gail); six grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM on Sunday, March 19, 2017 at Turin Baptist Church, Turin, GA, with Pastor John McDuffie officiating. Burial will immediately follow the service at Sharpsburg Baptist Church, Sharpsburg, GA. Member - US Army
John was born on May 20, 1945 and passed away on Thursday, September 1, 2016. John was a resident of Newnan, Georgia at the time of his passing. John earned a BS degree from Montana State University in Bozeman, MT in 1967 and an MBA degree from Bellarmine University in Louisville, KY in 1975. He studied at Stonier School of Banking and Finance at Georgetown university for his Ph.D. He was also a 1987 graduate of the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College, Ft. Leavenworth, KS. After entering the military in 1968, John served 30 years in the U.S. Army and Army reserves retiring in 2005 as a Lieutenant Colonel. During his military service, John served combat tours in Vietnam receiving the Combat Infantryman's Badge, Purple Hearts, Bronze Stars, Air Medal and Army Commendation Medals. He was married to Margaret (Maggie) Adams. A memorial service recognizing John's life was held on Saturday, September 3, 2016 at 11:00 AM from the Chapel of McKoon Funeral Home with Dr. Jimmy Patterson officiating. Life Member - US Navy
Robert Watson Alexander Jr., age 88, passed away Monday, September 22, 2014, at Savannah Court Assisted Living in Newnan. He was born April 19, 1926, in Coweta County to the late Robert Watson Alexander Sr. and Elizabeth Morris Alexander. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Harriett Owens Alexander. He was also predeceased by his sisters, Elizabeth Alexander Morris and Mary Alexander Bowers. He was a graduate of Newnan High School in 1944 and joined the Navy right after graduation. He was veteran of World War II. After leaving the Navy he attended and graduated from the Barber College of Atlanta. Upon his return to Newnan he joined the family business, which was the barber shop his father purchased in 1919. He took over ownership in 1946 and after 69 years of the Alexander family owning and operating the barber the shop, it closed its doors in 1988. He loved working on the Court Square because he said he loved being in the middle of the action in the downtown area. He was a lifetime member of The Veterans of Foreign Wars and of the American Legion for 65 years. He tremendously enjoyed woodworking. He had a grand shop behind his home where he constantly made useful kitchen and household items for friends and family. He crafted all of Harriet's frames and display racks for her paintings. He constructed outbuildings and the famous moonshine still at Powers Crossroads Festival. He ran and operated legal stills at the festival for eight years. It was a true passion of his. He was a devoted caregiver for his mother until she passed away at the age of 102. The graveside service was Wednesday, September 24 at 11 a.m. at Oak Hill Cemetery with Dr. Joel Richardson officiating.  Bronze Legacy Life Member - US Army
Bobby Bailey Hammond, age 88, passed away Wednesday, July 16, 2014 at his home in Newnan surrounded by his family. Born on May 13, 1926, the youngest son of Dr. and Mrs. G.W. Hammond, he was a life-long resident of Newnan. The funeral service is Saturday, July 19th at 11 AM in the chapel of McKoon Funeral Home, 38 Jackson St. Newnan, with Rev. JoAn Kinrade officiating. Burial will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery. The visitation is Friday evening from 6 PM until 8 PM at McKoon Funeral Home. Along with his parents he is preceded in death by his oldest brother, Lt. George Willis Hammond, Jr. He is survived by the love of his life Mary Hammond; children, Al Hammond and his wife Cynthia of Newnan, Victoria Pyles and her husband Tommy of Manchester, GA, Kathryn Spears and her husband Stuart of Macon, GA, Anna Bergeron and her husband Mike of Laquey, MO. He is also survived by 8 grandchildren, five great-great grandchildren and brothers Harold S. Hammond of Newnan, GA, Hulett A. Hammond and his wife Barbara of Gainesville, GA, and special caregivers Tracy Rogers, Jessica Mcelwaney and Sandy Bird and many nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, great-great nieces, great-great nephews and many cousins. Mr. Fred Morgan, age 87 of Newnan died at his residence on March 22, 2014. He was born in Haralson County on October 31, 1926 to the late Homer Spencer Morgan and Mattie Lizzie Ward Morgan. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his siblings, Mary, Hilda, Marjorie, Frances, Wilbur, Donald, and Winston. Mr. Morgan served his country in the United States Navy then went to watchmaking school on the GI Bill. He became a certified horologist and opened Morgan Jewelers in downtown Newnan in 1962. This is the oldest continuous business on the square in Newnan. Mr. Morgan was a member of Unity Baptist Church and attended the Senior Men's Sunday School Class. He was also a member of the VFW, the American Legion, The Elks Club, and the Masonic Lodge. He was a booster in the community for everyone including Newnan High School and East Coweta High School. Surviving are his wife, Josephine Morgan; children, Jim Morgan (Angie), Jeff Morgan (Camille), Greg Morgan (Leigh), and Debra Morgan Williams (Fred) all of Newnan; brother, Ferrell Morgan (Sue) of Toccoa; sister, Elizabeth Anderson of Kennesaw; grandchildren; Kelley Williams, Spence Morgan (Erika), Christin Bell (David), Blair Morgan, Ward Morgan, Ryan Morgan (Shelby), Jacob Morgan, Kendall Morgan; great grandchildren, Macy, Addycin, Ethan, Brycin. |
